Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Elmira, NY (February 28, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Area Sheet Metal Workers LU #112, will conduct a recruitment from March 3, 2014 through February 27, 2015 for 10 sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that 10 ten openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for all three recruitment regions – the Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, and Western regions.  This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Allegany, Broome, Chemung, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins.

Applications can be obtained at 1200 Clemens Center Parkway, Elmira, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications are accepted continuously.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). 
  • Must submit a signed affidavit stating that he/she is physically able to do the work of a sheet metal worker, which includes:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to noise and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing and walking.
    • Repeated squatting and bending.
    • Working indoors and outdoors in temperatures ranging from 0 to 140 degrees.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
    • Working off of ladders and scaffolds at heights which may exceed 50 feet.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license.  Apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction.
  • Must submit to a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
