Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Poughkeepsie, NY (September 17, 2013) – The International Union of Elevator Constructors Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, Local Union #138, will conduct a recruitment from September 23, 2013 through October 4, 2013 for three elevator/escalator constructor and modernizer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local #138 Union Hall, 25 Market Street, Suite 401, Poughkeepsie, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.).
  • Must score a minimum of 70 out of 100 on the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test. The score is part of the evaluation. A $25.00 testing fee is required on the day the test is administered. Payment must be made by postal money order or bank certified check only. Cash and personal checks will not be accepted. Please note: You may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by a post-offer physical exam administered by a physician and paid for by the signatory contractor.
  • Must state that he/she is capable of performing the physical requirements of the trade, which include lifting up to 100 lbs., climbing, and working from heights.
  • Must pass a post-offer drug test administered by a laboratory, at the expense of the signatory contractor.
  • Must be a resident of the Local #138’s jurisdiction:
    • Counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster.
    • In Rockland County the town of Stoney Point.
    • In Westchester County, the towns of Bedford, Cortland, Lewisboro, Mt. Kimco, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers, and Yorktown.
    • In Columbia County, the towns of Ancram, Clermont, Copake, Gallatin, Germantown, Livingston, and Taghkanic.
    • In Greene County, the towns of Ashland, Catskill, Halcott, Hunter, Jewett, Lexington, Rattsville, Windham.
    • In Delaware County, the towns of Andes, Bovina, Colchester, Davenport, Delhi, Harpersfield, Hemdon, Kortright, Meredith, Middletown, Roxbury, Hancock, and Stamford.
  • Must be responsible for transportation to and from different jobsites, and to and from classroom training facility.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
