Chenango Price Chopper Receives High Performance Energy Efficiency Award from NYSERDA

NYSERDA Support for Energy Efficiency Project Helps Price Chopper Store

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded Price Chopper Supermarkets a high performance energy efficiency plaque for energy efficiency measures to its Chenango store that will cut energy costs by $139,000 annually.

NYSERDA awards High Performance Building Plaques to hospitals, colleges and universities, schools, businesses and other organizations that construct or substantially renovate buildings that perform at least 30 percent above the New York State energy code. The Price Chopper store, located at 33 Chenango Bridge Road, is rated to perform 36 percent more efficiently than code and is expected to save 1.3 million kilowatt hours annually, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by 189 homes annually.

Price Chopper will receive $245,785 in support from NYSERDA, which helps offset the incremental cost of high-efficiency lighting, skylights and lighting controls, high-performance windows and insulation.

“Price Chopper has long-collaborated with NYSERDA to set and achieve landmark energy efficiency goals for our supermarkets in New York State,” said Joe Berman, Manager of Sustainability, Price Chopper Supermarkets. “The 29 percent energy reduction that we’ve realized at our new Chenango Bridge store is an excellent example of how NYSERDA’s New Construction Program has enhanced our design process and improved our ability to build high performance energy-efficient buildings.”

“Price Chopper’s commitment to sustainability is well-known, and it is an established and highly recognized green leader.  We applaud Price Chopper on making this high performance energy efficient investment,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO, NYSERDA. “The retail sector provides great energy savings potential, and through projects like this one, the State is helping businesses remain competitive by reducing their energy costs and saving money while at the same time protecting the environment. This project highlights how Governor Cuomo’s call for partnership between government and the private sector is making New York a national leader in energy efficiency.”

Funding for this project is through NYSERDA’s New Construction Program (NCP), which provides technical support to design teams and financial incentives to building owners involved in the construction of new or substantially renovated structures in New York State. NCP is a first-come, first-served program available to commercial, institutional and industrial sector customers of certain utilities. NCP incentives are paid out upon project completion and installation of approved energy efficiency measures is verified.  The intent of the program is not only to improve energy efficiency and green building practices, but to effect a permanent transformation in the way buildings are designed and constructed throughout the state.
