Plumbers & Pipefitters Recruit Apprentices

Binghamton, NY (March 2, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union #112 will conduct a recruitment from March 3, 2014 through February 2, 2015 for  two steamfitter apprentices and four plumber & steamfitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for both recruitment regions – the Mohawk Valley and Southern Tier regions.  This division of Local Union #112 has jurisdiction in the counties of Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, and Tioga.

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #112, 11 Griswold Street, Binghamton, NY from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first working Monday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applicants can find more information on the Union’s website, http://www.ualocal112.org.  Applications must be received no later than February 2, 2015.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must sign an affidavit attesting that he/she is at least 18 years old.  Proof of age may be required.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as recognized by local school authorities.  Must sign an affidavit attesting to the same.  Proof may be required.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a physical exam, including drug testing, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign an affidavit stating that he/she is physically able to do the work of a steamfitter or a plumber & steamfitter, which includes:
    • Performing all phases of the plumbing industry.
    • Regularly working at varying heights up to 150 feet.
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants. 
    • Prolonged standing and walking.
    • Repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment (the minimum lifting requirement is 77 pounds).
    • Working off of ladders and scaffolds.
    • Working in wet and muddy conditions.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.
  • Must sign a scholarship loan agreement in conjunction with training classes.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be able to purchase text material for use in related training classes, as required.  Many text materials are provided free of charge, except those which need to be replaced or those which students wish to write in or use for reference guides in the field. The cost for those materials should not exceed $850.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
