ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals this Weekend… Championships March 20-21 in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Only eight teams are left standing after the opening round of the ECAC Hockey post season tournament. Home ice was kind to six teams last weekend, while RPI and Union were the two road teams to claim opening round victories. RPI topped Clarkson in three games, while Union, the reigning national champions, had little difficulty handling Cornell, sweeping the Big Red in two games by a combined 11-2 score.

Here are the matchups in this weekend’s quarterfinals. All series are best-of-three, and each game starts at 7 p.m., with the exception of a possible Game 3, Sunday, between Union and Quinnipiac, which would start at 4 p.m.

Number-10 Union (18-16-2, 8-13-1) travels to top seeded Quinnipiac (21-9-4, 16-3-3). The Bobcats swept their regular season series, 2-0, with Union. Union is defending ECAC Hockey and national champion.

Number-nine RPI (12-24-3, 8-12-2) at number-two seed St. Lawrence (18-13-3, 14-7-1). The two schools split their two regular season games, with St. Lawrence falling to RPI in the final game of the regular season. The Saints outscored the Engineers 6-5 in their two matchups.

Number-six Harvard (17-11-3, 11-8-3) travels to third seeded Yale (17-7-5, 12-6-4). The Bulldogs swept their season series against the Crimson, three games to none, and outscoring Harvard 9-2. The Bulldogs have gone 9-0-1 against the Harvard since being eliminated by the Crimson in the 2012 ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.

Number-four Colgate (19-11-4, 11-7-4) plays host to number-five seed Dartmouth (17-10-4, 12-8-2). Both teams finished the regular season with 26 points. Colgate earned home ice and the higher seed courtesy of their one win against the Big Green. The two schools skated to a 1-0-1 regular season record against each other this season.

The winners from these four matchups will come to Lake Placid, N.Y., March 20-21, to play in the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament. The winner of this tournament will receive an automatic bid to the 68th annual NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament.
