Governor Cuomo Announces Service Restorations on Main Line Track Following LIRR Derailment

Work on Full Restoration Continues; Customers Encouraged to Consider Alternative LIRR Lines During Monday Morning Commute
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that MTA Long Island Rail Road crews have restored train service to one of the two Main Line tracks east of New Hyde Park where a train derailed on Saturday night. The restoration allows limited train service to resume in time for Monday morning’s rush hour on the LIRR’s Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma and Oyster Bay Branches.

“After working around the clock, the dedicated staff at the MTA and LIRR have successfully prepared one Main Line track for Monday’s morning rush hour,” Governor Cuomo said. “Commuters should be aware that as work continues to ready the second track and restore full service, the potential for delays does exist. I thank the men and the women of the MTA and LIRR for the tremendous job they have done thus far and thank commuters for their patience as the recovery effort is completed.”

Because only one track is restored, customers are being urged to consider using the Babylon, Hempstead, Port Washington and Montauk Branches tomorrow morning as alternatives. Customers who do choose to use the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma and Oyster Bay Branches should anticipate the potential for delays of 20 to 30 minutes and increased crowding.

Services Updates Available on Many Methods

The LIRR is urging its customers who use the three affected branches to gather information about transportation status and options on Monday morning before heading out. The LIRR will update customers in these ways:

· MTA.info. The rail tab of the “Service Status” box at the left side of www.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each branch, updated every minute. In addition, customers can visit www.mta.info/lirr to see special service notices in the upper center of the page.

· Email and text message service updates. Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.

· @LIRR on Twitter. Twitter users can follow @LIRR to receive updates of a similar nature to the email and text alerts, shortened to fit Twitter’s format.

· LIRR Train Time™. Customers who use the LIRR Train Time™ app will see up-to-the-minute status for each upcoming train at each station. As a caution, trains that start out their trips on time may experience delays en route.

· News media reports. LIRR customers are urged to listen to traffic and transit updates as the railroad will keep the media updated as new information becomes available.
