ECAC Hockey Men’s Championship Tickets Remain on Sale

ALBANY, N.Y. --- Both fifth seeded Clarkson and number eight seed St. Lawrence advanced into the ECAC Hockey championship tournament’s quarterfinal round with first round series wins.

The Golden Knights (20-15-4, 11-9-2) overcame a 1-0 series deficit to 12th seeded Princeton (6-26-0, 4-18-0) to win their best two out of three series, while the Saints (15-17-4, 7-11-4) needed only two games to dispatch the number nine seed Brown (11-17-3, 8-13-1).

After dropping their first game at home to the Tigers, 3-2, in overtime, Friday, March 7, Clarkson rebounded to win the next two by scores of 4-0, Saturday, and 3-2, Sunday. Three seniors Jarrett Burton, Allan McPherson and Will Fredrick, each scored goals for the Golden Knights on Sunday.

Next up for Clarkson is fourth seeded and 12th ranked Cornell (15-8-5, 11-7-4). The two schools split their regular season series, each skating away with 3-2 wins.

The Saints took back-to-back 3-2 victories against the Bears. Senior goaltender Matt Weninger recorded his sixth and seventh career playoff wins for St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence will travel Colgate to take on the second seeded Raiders. Colgate, ranked 17th in the latest USCHO.Com poll, swept their two regular season games against the Saints, scoring 12 goals and giving up six.

In other opening round playoff action, 10 seed Dartmouth (10-18-4, 7-13-2) upset number seven RPI (15-16-6, 8-9-5) three games to two. The Big Green dropped the series opener, 4-1, before taking the next two by scores of 3-2 and 5-4.  The Engineers have not won a home post season playoff series since 2004.

Dartmouth’s playoff run will continue next weekend when they travel to face the conference’s top seed, Union (24-6-4, 18-3-1). In their two meetings this season, The Dutchmen skated to wins of 7-2 and 3-2.

This weekend’s, March 14-16, quarterfinals will also feature a rematch from last season’s NCAA championship game when 16th ranked and sixth seeded Yale (17-9-5, 10-8-4) travels to Hamden, Conn. to face the tournament’s third seed and sixth ranked Quinnipiac (22-8-6, 12-6-4).  The Bulldogs, the reigning national champions, swept Harvard (10-17-4, 6-12-4), the tournament’s 11th seed, two games to none, when they blanked the Crimson 4-0, Friday, ahead of a 2-1 win, on Saturday.

On March 21-22, the conference’s top four post season teams will face off in Lake Placid when the Olympic Center plays host to the 2014 ECAC Hockey men’s championships.  The winner of this tournament will receive an automatic bid to the 67th annual NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament.

Lake Placid last played host to the tournament from 1993-2002 and the event marks the 53rd overall conference championship.  The two semifinal games will take place Friday, March 21, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and the championship game will be played Saturday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m.
