DEC INVESTIGATING DISCHARGE FROM WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT IN GREENE COUNTY

Spill Resulted in Fish Kill at Nearby Potic Creek

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating an Alum spill that occurred earlier today at the village of Catskill’s water treatment facility and resulted in a fish kill in the nearby Potic Creek in the town of Coxsackie.

Approximately 1,500 gallons of aluminum salts, or alum, leaked from the facility due to a broken pipe. Crews are working Sunday to stop the flow into the creek. Potic Creek is not a public drinking water supply and residents in the area may observe dead fish in the vicinity of the plant.

DEC and village staff are actively working to collect the dead fish. DEC’s investigation is ongoing and Emergency Spill Response experts will continue to oversee the cleanup until it is complete and public and and the environment is protected.
