The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is advising media it expects to be able to share footage this afternoon of Piper the Osprey being released into the wild after being blown by high wind into an LIRR train in Greenport, N.Y., on April 18.
Piper spent the last three and a half weeks being rehabilitated by the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in East Quogue, N.Y., and the Raptor Trust, a bird rehabilitation and education center in Millington, N.J. where surgery was performed on the bird’s flight feathers.
The Evelyn Alexander center was alerted to the animal’s plight on April 18 by LIRR train engineer Ryan Dunaske. Piper suffered 10 damaged flight feathers in the incident, and had to undergo a procedure called “imping,” which replaces damaged feathers with those from a donor osprey.
