MTA Announces Service Details for Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) services will operate on special schedules in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 15. Details are below.

New York City Subway, Buses and Staten Island Railway

On Monday, January 15, the New York City Subway will operate on a weekday schedule with minor timing changes.  Customers are advised to allow additional travel time, and use Subway Time for live wait times, or TripPlanner+ to plan their trips accordingly.  

New York City Buses will operate on a weekday schedule with minor timing changes except for Staten Island and Queens, where Limited Stop routes S81, S84, S86, S90, S91, S92, S94, S96, S98 Q4, Q6, Q25 and Q65 will not run.  Weekday local service will operate along these routes.  In addition, all Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens “X” express routes will operate on a special schedule with minor adjustments in departure times. 

Long Island Rail Road

MTA Long Island Rail Road will operate on a modified Holiday Schedule with a total of 32 extra trains provided on the Babylon, Montauk, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma Branches. Off-peak fares will apply all day.

The extra trains’ departure times are included in the current LIRR timetables dated January 8, 2018, through February 25, 2018, in shaded columns marked “Note M.” The timetables are available at stations or online at the LIRR’s website at www.mta.info/lirr by accessing the schedules link, where one can access for full timetables for each branch or select desired travel times and destination.

Metro-North Railroad

Metro-North will operate on an enhanced Saturday schedule that includes 35 additional trains. The enhanced Saturday service includes 14 extra trains on the Harlem Line, including one additional Wassaic connection, 3 Hudson Line extras, and 15 extra New Haven Line trains offering branch connections. For West of Hudson customers, there will be 3 additional trains on the Port Jervis Line. Off-peak fares apply all day.

The Hudson Rail Link and the Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon ferries will operate on special schedules

The extra Hudson, Harlem and New Haven trains’ departure times are included in the current Metro-North timetables, dated October 6, 2017, and shaded with notes indicating that they will operate on January 15. The timetables are available at stations or online at Metro-North’s website at www.mta.info/mnr by accessing the schedules link, where one can access for full timetables for each branch or select desired travel times and destination.  The extra Port Jervis Line service is reflected in the current West of Hudson schedule, dated January 7, 2018.

Email and text message service updates – Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.

MTA Apps – Customers who use the MTA Subway Time, MTA Bus Time, LIRR Train Time, Metro-North Train Time apps will see up-to-the-minute status for each station or stop.

MTA.info – The “Service Status” box at the left side of www.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status, refreshed every minute.

For those who prefer the telephone, information is available from the MTA Customer Service Center by calling 511, the New York State Travel Information Line. This line is reachable by dialing (877) 690-5114 from Connecticut or (877) 690-5116 from other states.  Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can use their preferred service provider for the free 711 relay to reach the MTA at 511.
