Millwrights Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (March 25, 2016) - The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee, Millwrights Local Union #1163, will conduct a recruitment from April 25, 2016 through April 21, 2017 for 10 millwright apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 10 openings listed for millwright apprentices represent the total number for multiple recruitment regions: the Capital District, Central, Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, North Country, Southern Tier, and Western regions of New York. 

Applications can be obtained at the following locations and times (this schedule is in effect throughout the recruitment period, excluding legal holidays):

  • Olean - New York State Dept. of Labor Career Center, 175 North Union St., Suite 4, Olean, NY, on the third Wednesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Rochester - Empire State Carpenters Training Center, 21 Jet View Dr., Rochester, NY, on the third Tuesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Binghamton - Local Union #277, 23 Market St., Binghamton, NY, on the second and third Wednesday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Elmira - Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, 181 Industrial Park Rd., Horseheads, NY, on the second and third Wednesday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Buffalo - Construction Industry Employers Association, Inc., 2660 Williams St., Cheektowaga, NY, on the first Tuesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Syracuse - Local Union #277, 3247 Vickery Rd., North Syracuse, NY, on the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Liverpool - Local Union #1163, 1035 7th North St., 1C, Liverpool, NY, on the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Watertown - New York State Dept. of Labor Career Center, 1000 Coffeen Street, Watertown, NY, on the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Utica - New York State Dept. of Labor Career Center, 207 Genesee St. Suite 202, Utica, NY, on the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 
  • Plattsburg - Local Union #291, 23 Elm Street, Plattsburg, NY, on the third Thursday of every month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Albany - Albany Training Center, 27 Warehouse Row, Albany, NY, every Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.   

            The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Working from heights.
    • Working in confined spaces and underground.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
    • Lifting objects weighing as much as 50 pounds.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various jobsites and related instruction classes. A signed statement attesting to this must be submitted at the time of application.
  • Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of LU #1163, which includes every county in New York State except for Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester, Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a math and measuring test.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
