Revised: Statement of MTA NYC Transit President Andy Byford About Comments on Cleanliness of Subway Cars

“This is insulting to our professional cleaners who work hard every day to ensure trains are clean for six million riders. On occasion, when messes are left behind, there may be a gap before cleaners can get to a particular train. From my daily observations, cleaners do an outstanding job which I very much appreciate.”

Revising second bullet point below for clarity to show data for terminal car cleaners only (excluding other cleaners throughout the subway system):

Background

  • Out of 2.1 million car trips/month, the average number of soiled car incidents is 204/month (last full year data available, Sept. 2018 through Aug. 2019)
  • 378 terminal car cleaners currently working, including 25 cleaners who were restored in the 2019 operating budget per agreement with TWU Local 100 (net reduction of 66 for 2019 operating year instead of 91).
  • Impact: trains on some lines are cleaned at one end of the line only, not both terminals.
  • In October 2019, notwithstanding incidents involving soiled cars, NYC Transit subway on-time-performance reached 81.5%, the fifth consecutive month above 80%.
