Long Time LOTTO Player from Macedon Wins $9,800,000 Jackpot

Seventy-six-year-old Richard Giles of Macedon is a long-time Lottery player.  Giles said he plays all the Lottery’s draw games, but it was the flagship LOTTO game that changed his life forever.  On October 11, 2017 Giles purchased the lone jackpot winning ticket for that night’s $9,800,000 jackpot.

“I checked my numbers after the drawing and realized that I matched all six numbers,” explained the retired Xerox employee.  “I wasn’t sure at first so I checked them again the next day and sure enough they matched.”

The winning numbers for the October 11, 2017 LOTTO drawing were: 06 – 16 – 24 – 25 – 37 – 38.

“I immediately locked the ticket up in my safe and called my financial advisor,” he explained.  Giles opted to receive his prize as a one-time lump sum payment.  He will receive a net check totaling $4,419,643 after required withholdings.

In addition to investing his winnings, Giles said the money will help him further enjoy his hobbies.  “I like to golf and bowl, so I’ll get myself a new set of clubs and a new bowling ball.”

Giles purchased his jackpot winning LOTTO ticket at Hegedorns Market on Ridge Road in Webster.

Giles was the 95th New York Lottery player to claim a prize totaling $1,000,000 or more in 2017.

The New York Lottery contributed $23,965,409 in Lottery Aid to Education to school districts in Wayne County during fiscal year 2016-2017.

About the New York Lottery

The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.27 billion in fiscal year 2016-2017 to help support education in New York State. The Lottery’s contribution represents approximately 14 percent of total state education aid to local school districts.

New York Lottery revenue is distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to distribute other state aid to education. It takes into account both a school district’s size and its income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery school funding.
