Long Island City, NY (May 9, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers Local Union #1 will conduct a recruitment from June 9, 2014 through June 20, 2014 for 100 plumber apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be obtained in person by the applicant at the Local Union #1 Training Center, 37-11 47^th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period.  Applications will be available for 10 business days or until 1,000 applications have been issued, whichever comes first.  All applicants are required to bring a form of positive proof of identification.  Only one application will be issued per person.

All applications must be returned by hand to the Training Center office between Monday, July 28, 2014 and Friday, August 1, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  A receipt will be issued to the person who returns the completed application.

Upon return, the application must be fully completed and submitted with a photocopy of a high school diploma and an official sealed transcript from a state-approved public or private high school.  The transcript must reflect a minimum of four calendar years of high school work.  Scores in both Sequential Math I and Sequential Math II must be at least a 70 or a “C.”  In lieu of the required math course grades, the Committee will accept a high school diploma and transcript accompanied by a TABE 10 (Test of Adult Basic Education) math test (Complete Battery - Level A) with a “Total Math” score of 10 or higher.  

In lieu of a four-year high school diploma, the Committee will accept a photocopy of a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma issued by the Department of Education of the state in which the test was taken, with a transcript confirming a GED exam or TASC exam math score of 550 or higher.

International Academic Credentials must be accompanied by a World Education Services (www.wes.org) course-by-course evaluation report in a sealed envelope.

There is a $25.00 application fee for the apprenticeship program.  Applicants must submit a $25.00 money order with the application.  No cash or checks will be accepted.  Applicants may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

Must be at least 18 years old at the time of entry into the apprenticeship.  Proof of age will be required after selection and prior to indenture (proof may consist of a birth certificate, passport, or driver’s license).

• Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.A.
• Must take a New York State Department of Labor aptitude test.  There is no testing fee for the aptitude test.
• Must appear for a personal interview, if selected.
• Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
