DEC SETS YOUTH CONSERVATION PROGRAM DATES

Hunter Safety Course to Be Offered This April for Youth Ages 12 to 16

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Cathy Haas today announced a two-day, hands-on youth hunting safety course to be offered in April by DEC’s Hunter Education Program. The event is part of the State’s Youth Conservation Program and designed to introduce youth between the ages of 12 and 16 to the basic principles of conservation and hunter education.

“The Youth Conservation Program has more than 30 years of success teaching our young hunters the importance of safe and ethical hunting in New York State,” Director Haas said. “We are proud to continue this program and welcome participants who will have the unique opportunity to learn from experienced mentors while earning their Hunter Education Training Certificate. I encourage any qualifying aspiring hunters to apply for this program and help lead the next generation of responsible hunters on Long Island.”

The course will take place on April 11 and 12, 2026 at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville and is open to youth who have not yet taken their Hunter Education Course. Applications must be returned by March 27, 2026, and can be found on DEC’s "Hunter Education Program Courses and Certifications" webpage.

This class is limited to 30 participants. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate. This certificate is required to purchase a hunting license.

The Peconic River Sportsman’s Club President Joseph Hocker said, “This is a wonderful program which goes well beyond the safe and proper handling of firearms. Students learn leadership qualities as well as self-respect, respect for others, respect for landowners, and respect for the environment and the game animals that they wish to pursue. The Peconic River Sportsman’s Club has hosted the YCP for over 30 years and is honored to help instruct these eager outdoor enthusiasts in becoming conservationists and protectors of our precious natural resources.”

The Youth Conservation Program is part of the HuntFishNY initiative encouraging increased participation in outdoor sports. Since 1994, this regional hunter safety event has been sponsored by the DEC’s Hunter Education Program, the New York State Conservation Officers Association, and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-of-state hunters and anglers and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. It includes streamlining hunting and fishing licensing, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing at various sites across the state, and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. This program also complements Governor Kathy Hochul’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” initiative to promote physical and mental health by encouraging kids and families to put down their phones and computers, take a break from social media, and enjoy recreation and the outdoors.
