COMMISSION ON NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE AND AMERICORPS CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF SERVING NEW YORK STATE WITH VOLUNTEER PROJECT AT NIAGARA FALLS STATE PARK

What:              AmeriCorps Park Cleanup Day

Where:           Niagara Falls State Park, 332 Prospect Street, Niagara Falls, NY

When:             Wednesday, May 8, 8:00 a.m. - noon

More than 300 AmeriCorps volunteers from across New York State will clean up and beautify Niagara Falls State Park on Wednesday, May 8, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the AmeriCorps program. Members will weed, spread mulch, plant flowers, and pick up trash to get the park ready for spring and summer.

The service project day is part of the New York State Commission on National and Community Service’s (CNCS) annual service summit, where members from across the state gather to participate in a volunteer project that will benefit the Buffalo-Niagara region.

The Commission funds the AmeriCorps program, which provides educational stipends for 1,500 members statewide who, in turn, contribute to their communities through volunteer activities. Since 1994, more than 90,000 New York State residents have served approximately 140 million volunteer hours through AmeriCorps, earning Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $334.4 million.
