The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is reminding customers that masks remain required onboard subways, buses, commuter rails, paratransit and within indoor stations. The guidance is consistent with New York State Department of Health and the CDC’s guidelines that require masks in certain settings including public transit. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced yesterday that state-mandated restrictions were being lifted as 70% of New Yorkers aged 18 or older have received the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccination series, but that changes in restrictions for the remainder of New York State will follow federal health guidance on transit requirements. 

Under updated CDC guidance masks are no longer required on outdoor NYC Transit platforms, outdoor Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway stations and platforms, and bus stops. Once a customer boards a train, bus or paratransit vehicle, masks are required. 

“New York has made remarkable progress fighting back against COVID-19, but the pandemic is still here and for riders to best protect themselves and their fellow riders, masks remain required,” said Patrick Warren, MTA Chief Safety Officer. “The MTA will continue to monitor CDC and New York State Department of Health guidance on masks and update our customers as needed.” 

Mask usage throughout the MTA system remains strong, with usage exceeding 90% during the pandemic. The MTA continues to recommend the wearing of masks in these outdoor areas by people who are not fully vaccinated.
