Rock Tavern, NY (June 3, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Empire State Carpenters, Zone 11 (formerly known as Local Union #19), will conduct a recruitment from July 3, 2014 through July 2, 2015 for four carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be obtained in person at the Empire State Carpenters Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at time of application.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.   
• Must sign a statement indicating that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which includes:
  • Lifting and carrying objects over 50lbs.
  • Climbing and working off of scaffolds and ladders at various heights.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
  • Performing constant repetitive motions.
  • Standing, stooping, and kneeling for prolonged periods of time.
  • Following established safety rules and regulations, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Shaping and cutting materials, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
  • Assembling and fastening materials, using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Building or repairing cabinets, doors, framework, floors, and other wooden fixtures using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Erecting scaffolding and ladders.
  • Installing structures and fixtures using hand tools and power tools.
• Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of Zone 11, which includes Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must have a driver’s license and/or reliable transportation to and from various work sites and related instruction.
• Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must participate in an interview, if selected.
• Must be willing and able to attend related instruction at an Empire State Carpenters Regional Training Facility for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
• Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
