New York State Office of General Services Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced that 20 sailboats declared surplus by SUNY Maritime College will be among items for sale at an upcoming State surplus vehicle and equipment auction on Staten Island. The auction is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18 at the Staten Island Development Disabilities property at 930 Willowbrook Road.

The boats were part of SUNY Maritime College Sailing Team’s 2012 fleet of Zim Club 420 sailboats. The boats will be divided among six lots consisting of between one and six vessels per lot.

The 20 boats have:

  • Heavy-duty white rub rails
  • Heavy-duty molded bow bumpers
  • Plexus adhesive fill in the 12 inches of the bow and the last 12 inches of the gunwales
  • Gel-coated bow numbers
  • Recessed centerboard gaskets, some of which are leaking and may need to be replaced
  • Tennis ball transom drains
  • Wired-on quick-release jib tack pins
  • Adjustable hiking strap ties with eye strap and horn cleat
  • Heavy-duty aluminum tillers with 33-inch tiller extensions
  • Used main sails and jibs with numbers, draft stripes, and the school name on them

The boats are being sold as-is. All of the boats are ready to sail but have hull dings and gel coat scratches that are typical for boats of this age and usage. All repair work on the boats was done in-house by SUNY Maritime College’s maintenance team. Boats were cleaned, compounded, waxed, and stored upright on their sterns indoors in a climate-controlled garage each winter.

The boats are available for inspection by the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at SUNY Maritime College, 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx. Additional inspection times can be arranged by emailing waterfront.SUNYMaritime@edu.

The boats will remain at SUNY Maritime College until they are sold and will not be transported to the auction site on Staten Island.

The majority of the proceeds generated from the sale of the boats will be reinvested in the SUNY system.

The auction site on Staten Island will be open for registration at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the auction, October 18. All bidders must register to participate in the auction and can go here to preregister ahead of time and view all items being auctioned.
