Service Changes are Part of Subway Action Plan, Station Repairs and Other Ongoing Maintenance, and Upgrade Work for Improvements on Multiple Lines

These weekend service changes are part of the MTA Subway Action Plan, station improvements in Queens and Manhattan, and ongoing maintenance, repair and upgrade work throughout the MTA New York City Transit subway system to maintain and upgrade track, signal, station and other infrastructure in order to provide customers with safe and reliable service.  More information on the 2015-2019 MTA Capital Program is available here.

This weekend, work crews will be dispersed throughout the entire subway system to perform a variety of critical tasks in the areas of track replacement and maintenance, signal modernization, station enhancements, electrical upgrades and communication improvements.  All this work is aligned with the MTA Subway Action Plan, a comprehensive plan to stabilize and modernize the subway system by attacking the key drivers of 79 percent of delay-causing major incidents and strategically targeting additional personnel and equipment to focus on critical parts of the system.   

Through summer 2020, the MTA is rehabilitating the  tunnel using an improved construction plan that maintains regular weekday and peak hour service for 90 percent of  customers, as weekday and peak hour service are unchanged.  The project minimizes construction-related disruption to riders and communities near the work sites while yielding cost savings due to the revised work plan. From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29,  trains, shuttle buses, and M3 will replace  trains between 137 St and 96 St due to critically important switch replacement work at the 96 Street Interlocking.  The multi-phased project will install new switches between the northbound express and local tracks at the 96 St Interlocking on the Seventh Avenue  Lines.  The current switches were installed in 1990 and are nearing the end of their useful life.  Workers are using the service outages to complete additional work throughout numerous stations along the  lines, including installing new track, repairing existing track and track beds, cleaning drains, and fixing signals.  Ultimately, this work will improve long term service reliability, and was chosen for completion during weekends in late July and August in order to impact the smallest amount of customers possible.  For more information regarding this critical work, refer to this prior press release. 

This weekend,  service will run in two sections: between Van Cortlandt Park-242 St and 137 St, and between South Ferry and 96 St, and via the  to/from Harlem-148 St, skipping 145 St.  Shuttle buses will run between 96 St and 137 St.  Transfer at 96 St and/or 137 St.

Through early 2020, trains skip 168 St in both directions due to elevator replacement work.  For alternate service take the  at/to this station.  Transfer between  and  trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle.  A free out-of-system transfer with a MetroCard is available between the 207 St or 215 St  and 207 St .  Take the M5 to/from 157 St .  Late nights, the M5 will run between 168 St and 157 St.  This work is part of a major elevator replacement project at five separate “deep” stations in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan.  The  line part of the 168 St station is 112 years old.  Some of the oldest components in these elevators and the accompanying machine rooms are more than 90 years old.  When completed, the elevator doors at 168 St  will open at both the front and rear sides at the lower mezzanine level.  The rear passageway behind the elevators at the lower mezzanine level will be reopened in order to improve customer flow.  For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions click here.

From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and Franklin Av due to ongoing station rehabilitation work at President St. Sterling St, and Winthrop St.   trains will run between Wakefield-241 St and Franklin Av, and via the  line to/from Crown Hts-Utica Av.  Free shuttle buses will make all  line station stops between Franklin Av and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College.  Transfer between buses and  trains at Franklin Av or Nostrand Av.   

From 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday to Monday, July 26 to July 29, uptown trains will skip 79 St and 86 St due to track and switch maintenance near 96 St.  As an alternative, use a downtown  or  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at 96 St or 72 St.

From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and July 28, downtown trains will run express from E 180 St to 3 Av-149 St due to track maintenance including rail, plate and tie repairs.  As an alternative, use an uptown  or  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at 149 St-Grand Concourse or E 180 St. 

Through July 2019, Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound trains will skip President St due to station rehabilitation work.  During this closure, for service to President St, take a Flatbush Av-bound  to Sterling St and transfer to a Manhattan-bound  or  train.  For service from President St, use the B44 local or B44 SBS bus.  Or, take a Manhattan-bound  to Franklin Av and transfer to a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College-bound  or  train. 

Through August 2019, Manhattan-bound trains will skip Winthrop St due to station rehabilitation work.  During this closure, for service to Winthrop St, use the nearby Sterling St or Church Avenue stations.  Or, take a  train to Sterling St and transfer to a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound  or .  For service from Winthrop St, take the B44 local or B44 SBS bus, or  to Church Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound  or  train. 

From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29,  and free shuttle buses will replace suspended  service due to track and switch maintenance near 125 St.  Free shuttle buses will run between Harlem-148 St and 135 St, stopping at 145 St.   trains will make  stops in Manhattan between Harlem-148 St and Chambers St (trains will skip 145 St).   trains will make  line station stops between 135 St and Franklin Av.   trains will make  stops between Franklin Av and New Lots Av.  Transfer between  trains and buses at 135 St, and between  and  at Franklin Av.       

From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29,  service will run to/from New Lots Av.   trains will make all  line station stops between Nevins St and New Lots Av. 

From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27, to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, uptown trains will skip 183 St, Fordham Rd, Kingsbridge Rd, and Bedford Pk Blvd due to track replacement.  As an alternative, use a downtown  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Mosholu Pkwy or Burnside Av. 

From 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28, trains will run every 16 minutes between Burnside Av and Woodlawn Av due to track panel replacement between 183 St and Mosholu Pkwy.  The last stop for some uptown trains will be Burnside Av; these trains will skip 170 St, Mt Eden Av, and 176 St.  Transfer at Burnside Av to continue your trip. 

Through September 2019, Eastchester-Dyre Av bound trains will skip Gun Hill Rd due to station rehabilitation work.  When finished, this will yield a better travel experience for customers, including the installation of a mezzanine to platform elevator, providing mobility impaired customers with better accessibility.  Rehabilitation work will consist of the expansion and reconfiguration of the control house, a new booth, a larger unpaid area, new ADA signage and cameras throughout the station, new station entrance and retail configuration, reconstructed platforms, new ADA boarding areas and tactile platform warning strips, new ADA hand railings along the platform staircases and modifications to the platform canopies to accommodate the new elevator shafts.

In order to accomplish the repair and reconstruction of the platforms within a safe environment, the northbound side of this station will be closed for approximately six months.  For service to this station, take the  to Baychester Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound .  For service from this station, take the  to Pelham Pkwy and transfer to an Eastchester-Dyre Av bound . 

From 5:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27, Flushing-Main St bound trains will run express from Queensboro Plaza to Mets-Willets Point to due to track maintenance.  As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Mets-Willets Point, Junction Blvd, 74 St-Broadway, 61 St-Woodside, or Queensboro Plaza.   

From 10 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Manhattan-bound trains will run local from Euclid Av to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts due to signal maintenance between Euclid Av and Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts.

From 9:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, downtown trains will run express from 168 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due to track maintenance including drain cleaning between 168 St and59 St-Columbus Circle.  As an alternative, use an uptown  local or  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle, 125 St, 145 St, or 168 St.  As a reminder,  trains do not during the late nights. 

From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer, the Rockaway Park/Beach 116 St S shuttle service will be extended to Rockaway Blvd to facilitate beach traffic to the peninsula.  Customers can take any  train to connect with the shuttle at Rockaway Blvd.  This seasonal service will also be available on Labor Day.  For more information on how to take MTA services to the beach, refer to this prior press release.

Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, service will end early due to track maintenance near W 4 St-Wash Sq.  As an alternative, take  and/or  trains instead.  As a reminder,  trains do not run on weekends.    

From 9:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Norwood-205 St bound trains will skip 182-183 Sts due to track maintenance near Fordham Rd.  As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Fordham Rd or Tremont Av.    

From 10:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will skip DeKalb Av and run express from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to 36 St due to structural maintenance at DeKalb Av.  For DeKalb Av, take the  via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.  For service to Union St, 4 Av-9 St, Prospect Av and 25 St, take the  to 36 St and transfer to a local Manhattan-bound  or  train.  For service from these stations, take the  or  to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound .   

From 11:45 p.m. Friday, July 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, trains will run via the  line in both directions between 21 St-Queensbridge and W 4 St-Wash Sq due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor.  As an alternative, use the nearby  line stations on 6 Av, , and/or Lexington Av  local or  to complete your trip.  For Queens Plaza, use the , days/evenings.  Transfer at W 4 St-Wash Sq , Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority , 47-50 Sts , 21 St-Queensbridge , and/or 74 St-Roosevelt Av .  Free shuttle buses will connect Court Sq-23 St, 21 St-Queensbridge, and Queens Plaza. 

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 27, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, trains will run local in both directions in Queens due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor. 

Through summer 2020,  trains will run every 20 minutes between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in both directions on weekends and weeknights.  Within Brooklyn,  trains run every 10 minutes in both directions on weekends from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.  NYC Transit encourages customers to take advantage of extensive and robust options in its alternative service plan for quicker travel or to avoid crowds.  A dedicated website on the  Project is available with trip planning tools, information on the project and travel guides for  stations from 8 Av to Lorimer St.  Customers are also encouraged to sign up for a weekly email newsletter on the  Project to get progress updates and reach Transit staff with feedback or questions.  For more information, visit https://new.mta.info/l-project.  

The alternate service options include: 

• Enhanced subway service on  and  lines on weeknights and weekends, including extended .
• Enhanced bus service on 14th Street, including additional weeknight and weekend M14A bus service to Delancey/Essex St for links to .
• The Williamsburg Link bus route, B91A, connects with the Bedford Av and Marcy Av subway stations.
• Free subway transfers to make connections easier between Livonia St  and Junius St , and from Broadway Gto Hewes St  or Lorimer St .

From approximately 11 p.m. Friday, July 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Lorimer St and Broadway Junction due to station improvements and electrical work on portions of the  line in Brooklyn.  This work, which requires crew access to platforms and tracks, includes connecting the new substations in Brooklyn to power that will allow NYC Transit to run more trains once the  Project is complete.  service will run in two sections: between 8 Av and Lorimer St every 20 minutes, and between Broadway Junction and Rockaway Pkwy, every 10 minutes, days/evenings, and every 20 minutes overnight.  Shuttle buses will run along two routes: between Lorimer St and Myrtle Av, and between Myrtle Av and Broadway Junction.  Transfer between trains and buses at Lorimer St and/or Broadway Junction.  Consider using the  to/from Broadway Junction, or the  to/from Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs.

Through summer 2020, service ends at approximately 10 p.m. weeknights between Forest Hills-71 Av and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor.  For Queens, take the .  For Court Sq-23 St, Lexington Av-53 St, and 5 Av/53 St, take the .  Transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq  or W 4 St .

Through summer 2020, from 10 p.m. Friday to 1:30 a.m. Saturday, and from 6 a.m. Saturday to 1:30 a.m. Monday, special weekend  service to help accommodate customers during the  Project runs between Brooklyn and up to 96 St in Manhattan.   trains will run between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the  to/from Lexington Av/63 St, and via the  to/from 96 St. 

From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27 to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza due to station renewal work at Astoria Blvd.   trains will run between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Queensboro Plaza.  Free shuttle buses will make all  line station stops between Queensboro Plaza and Astoria-Ditmars Blvd.  Some buses departing from Ditmars Blvd will run express to Queensboro Plaza.  Transfer between trains and buses at Queensboro Plaza.  As a reminder, the Astoria Blvd station is closed for ongoing renewal work. 

Through December 2019, trains will skip Astoria Blvd in both directions due to station renewal work to add four new elevators and other accessibility features, as well as demolish and rebuild the station mezzanine with more vertical clearance to over-height vehicles traveling below the station structure.  When this project is completed in late 2020, the Astoria Blvd station will have two street-to-mezzanine elevators, two mezzanine-to-platform elevators, a new station mezzanine, repaired or replaced structural columns and foundations, repaired concrete platform surfaces, new street and platform stairs, new platform stair enclosures, and new platform canopies and mezzanine overpass walkway canopies.  Lights, signs and gates will also be replaced.  The new station structure will be reinforced to support the weight of the new elevators and facilities.  For more details about this critical structural repair project, refer to this prior press release.  For information on improvement projects on the Astoria Line, refer to this prior press release.   

As an alternative, use nearby stations use nearby stations at 30 Av or Ditmars Blvd.  Take  to Queensboro Plaza, then  to 74 St-Roosevelt Av, or take the  to 74 St-Roosevelt Av.  As a reminder,  trains operate days/evenings only, and  trains do not run overnight or on the weekend.  M60 SBS customers are advised to use the LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS instead.  The LaGuardia Link Q70 SBS serves the 74 St-Roosevelt Av station.

Through July 2019, trains stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the tunnel. 

From 11 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Manhattan-bound trains are rerouted via the  (Lower Manhattan) from Canal St to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr due to track maintenance and replacement including plate and tie renewal between Canal St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.  Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will stop at City Hall, Cortlandt St, Rector St, Whitehall St, Court St, Jay St-MetroTech, and DeKalb Av. 

From 5:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27, to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound  trains will run express from Prospect Park to Kings Hwy due to track maintenance between Prospect Park and Kings Hwy.  As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound  train to complete your trip.  Transfer at Kings Hwy, Newkirk Plaza, Church Av, or Prospect Park.      

Beginning 8:30 p.m., Friday, July 26, service will end early due to track and switch replacement between Canal St and Atlantic-Barclays Ctr.  As an alternative, take the  or .  As a reminder,  trains do not run on weekends.
