Student Internship Program Exposes Next Generation of Leaders to Public Service Careers

Students Must Apply Before April 20, 2018

The New York State Department of Civil Service today announced the availability of approximately 500 new student internships for the upcoming Summer 2018 Session throughout New York State government and encouraged students to apply prior to the April 20, 2018 application deadline. Student internships are available across a wide array of State agencies and include opportunities in finance, environmental conservation, criminal justice, health care, engineering, and a host of other professional disciplines.

The Student Intern Program is administered by the Department of Civil Service and is one component of Governor Cuomo’s New New York Leaders Initiative, which focuses on attracting new and highly-skilled individuals to the State workforce through both internship and fellowship programs.

“Through Governor Cuomo’s Student Intern Program, New York State is attracting and developing the next generation of leaders to State government, while providing students with valuable hands-on program experience and interaction with government leaders and policy-makers,” said Lola W. Brabham, Acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Civil Service. “I encourage all interested college students to consider learning first-hand the value of public service by applying for one of these internships.”

“The value of an internship goes beyond earning school credit—it compliments a student’s academic coursework by showing what skills are needed and how to be a part of a professional team,” said SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. “The Department of Civil Service internship program continues to serve many of our SUNY students each year, providing them with experience in emerging disciplines from environmental conservation to engineering, and the chance to work with public service leaders who impact New York State.”

New York State has created a one-stop website – www.nysinternships.cs.ny.gov – that allows applicants to view job descriptions, create profiles, specify occupational interests, and upload resumes, writing samples, and letters of recommendation. Students can apply for multiple internships at the same time.

A current list of available internships for the Summer 2018 Session is available by visiting: https://nysinternships.cs.ny.gov/nnyl/main/viewinternships.cfm. Internships will continue to be posted regularly to the Student Internship Portal until April 13, 2018.

Student internships are available to undergraduate and graduate students at colleges and universities throughout New York State, as well as New York residents enrolled elsewhere. Each intern works in a particular area within an Executive Branch agency or department. While providing hands-on program assistance, interns will interact with government leaders and policy-makers.

Opportunities include paid and unpaid positions and some internships may provide academic credit depending on the policy of the intern’s educational institution.

Three internship sessions are offered each year: Spring, Summer, and Fall.
