Sutter Av-Rutland Rd and Junius St 3 Line Stations To Close for Five Months for Renewal Work

Renewals are Part of 7-Station Capital Project on the New Lots Av Line

Beginning 5:00 a.m. Monday, October 3, MTA New York City Transit will close the Sutter Av-Rutland Rd and Junius St stations as part of an ongoing $88 million capital project to rehabilitate seven elevated stations along the New Lots Av 3 line in Brooklyn’s Brownsville and East New York neighborhoods.

The project calls for station renewals at Sutter Av-Rutland Rd, Saratoga Av, Rockaway Av, Junius St, Pennsylvania Av and Van Siclen Av, as well as component repairs at New Lots Av.  Work at Saratoga Av, Rockaway Av, Pennsylvania Av and Van Siclen Av has already been completed.

For these stations that originally opened in the early 1900’s, improvements include the installation of new lighting, platforms, enhanced safety features, and upgraded communications. This project will bring all of these stations to a state-of-good repair and will create significantly better conditions for customers.

Station improvements will also feature the repair or replacement of mezzanine to platform stairs, repairs to mezzanine floors, wood siding, doors, windows, interior and exterior walls, installation of new ADA tactile warning strips at the platform’s edge, repairs to column bases, upgraded drainage and repairs to water and sewer lines, steel and concrete repairs, new stairway guardrails and new lighting beyond the platform canopies.  Each station will be painted, and canopies, windscreen panels and railings will also be replaced as required.  Customers will also benefit from new lighting in the mezzanines, and the incorporation of new artwork on the platforms.

“We must perform this vital work to reverse decades of wear and improve these stations to the standards our customers expect,” said Wynton Habersham, Senior Vice President, Department of Subways. “To perform this work safely and efficiently, the stations must be taken out of service. When these structural repairs and aesthetic upgrades are completed, we are confident our customers will appreciate the results of this work.”

Travel Alternatives

Beginning 5:00 a.m. Monday, October 3, until spring 2017, 34 trains will skip Sutter Av-Rutland Rd and Junius St in both directions.  Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service for customers who normally use these stations and will operate as follows:

  • For Service to/from Sutter Av-Rutland Rd, free shuttle buses operate between the Sutter Av-Rutland Rd station and the Crown Hts-Utica Av station at all times.
  • For Service to/from Junius St, free shuttle buses operate between the Junius St station and the Rockaway Av station at all times.

To ensure customers are well informed of these station closures and alternative service, notices will be posted in all stations along the New Lots Av branch prior to the commencement of work and announcements will be made on trains.  Brochures are also available at station booths.
