Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Orchard Park, NY (July 3, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union #22 will conduct a recruitment from August 5, 2014 through August 4, 2015 for three plumber apprentices and three steamfitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the six openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions. 

Applications can be obtained and submitted at Local Union #22, 3651 California Rd., Orchard Park, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications will also be available during normal business hours at the NYS Department of Labor offices in Jamestown, Olean, Albion, and Dunkirk.  Applications will only be accepted at Local Union #22 on the first Tuesday of each month, during the hours indicated above.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must attest in writing that he/she is physically able to perform the work of the trade.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must be a resident, of at least one year, within the jurisdiction of Local Union #22. This includes:
    • All townships in the counties of Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, and Wyoming.
    • In Genesee County - the townships of Alabama, Oakfield, Elba, Pembroke, Batavia, Darien, and Alexander.
    • In Orleans County - the townships of Yates, Ridgeway, and Shelby.
    • In Allegany County - the townships of Allen, Alma, Amity, Angelica, Belfast, Bolivar, Caneadea, Centerville, Clarksville, Cuba, Friendship, Genesee, Granger, Hume, New Hudson, Rushford, Scio, and Wirt.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a qualifying battery basic “Work Keys” assessment.  This includes achievement tests in Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must produce, if tentatively selected, any documentation of facts stated on the application, including high school diploma or equivalent, within 14 days of receiving an acceptance letter.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
