DEC REGION 5 TO PARTICIPATE IN ‘ADIRONDACK AND CATSKILL PARK DAY’ ON SEPT. 6 WITH FOUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers will Participate in Stewardship Projects to Celebrate and Enhance the Adirondack and Catskill Parks

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 5 is seeking volunteers for ‘Adirondack and Catskill Park Day’ on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, at the Adirondack Interpretive Center (Essex County), Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center (Franklin County), Rogers Rock Campground (Warren County), and the Adirondack Rail Trail (Franklin County).  

Adirondack and Catskill Park Day offers service projects throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Parks that focus on the conservation and enhancement of these unique and beautiful Forest Preserve lands. The event, hosted in partnership with Parks and Trails New York, is part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign - an effort to encourage year-round stewardship and highlight the State’s outdoor recreation assets by offering a series of themed stewardship days throughout the year.   

Volunteer registration is currently open for Adirondack and Catskill Park Day. New Yorkers are encouraged to join their community in a cleanup, enhancement, or restoration event near them. 

DEC Region 5 and participating partners are hosting the following volunteer opportunities for the public to participate in:  

Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) - event hosted in partnership with the AIC  

Date: Sept. 6, 2025 

Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Location: 5922 St. Rt. 28N, Newcomb, NY 12852

Project: Trail cleanup, weeding flower garden, and raking. Project tasks are subject to change. 

What to bring: Wear work-appropriate clothing and shoes. Make sure to bring water.

Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) - event hosted in partnership with the VIC  

Date: Sept. 6, 2025 

Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Location: Paul Smith’s VIC, 8023 NY-30, Paul Smiths, NY 12970. Please meet at the front desk of the Paul Smith's VIC. Park at the Paul Smith's VIC visitor parking lot and walk through the front doors of the building. The front desk will be on your right.

Project: Trimming foliage on the side of trails, drainage clearing, and dead wood removal. 

What to bring: Closed toe hiking boots/shoes, a backup warm layer, and water. Prepare to be in the woods for three hours. 

Appropriate for ages 13 and up. Register at Parks & Trails NY  

 

Rogers Rock Campground  

Date: Sept. 6, 2025 

Time: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Location: Campground booth

Project: Raking/facility cleanup, painting/staining throughout campground, and general campsite clean-up. 

What to bring: Work/gardening gloves, water, snacks, appropriate footwear.

Adirondack Rail Trail: McMaster Road – event hosted in partnership with the Adirondack Rail Trail Association (ARTA)  

Date: Sept. 6, 2025 

Time: 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. 

Location: Meet at the Adirondack Rail Trail parking area on McMaster Road

Project: Trimming brush from McMaster Road to Route 186 along the Adirondack Rail Trail. This project is on foot. 

What to bring: Gloves and a hand saw. 

Appropriate for ages 13 and up. Register at Parks & Trails NY
