Electricians Recruit Apprentices

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Niagara County Electricians Local Union #237 will conduct a recruitment from August 11, 2021 through August 10, 2022 for one Electrician (Housewire or Residential) apprentices and 10 Electrician apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions. 

Applications are available at Local #237, 8803 Niagara Falls Blvd., Niagara Falls, NY 14304, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Wednesday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications are also available online at www.ibew237.com/application-process at all times. Application may be mailed to the address above or placed in the secure drop box outside the building at the same address. Each applicant must sign and submit an affidavit (available on-line and in office) along with the application. All applications must be returned by August 22, 2022 in person or postmarked by August 22, 2022, if returned by mail.

Applicants must pay a $10.00 testing fee for in-house administration of an aptitude test. Applicants may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need. If applying to both Electrician and Electrician (Housewire or Residential) program, an applicant must fill out two applications.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Must provide evidence of successfully completing high school algebra or an equivalent. Must provide proof of high school transcripts or equivalent at time of enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of an electrician and electrician (Housewire or Residential), which includes:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, or towers of various heights.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces such as attics, manholes and crawlspaces.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after acceptance into the program.
  • Must qualify for an interview by taking and passing the Electrical Trade Aptitude Test.
  • Must provide DD-214 to verify military background and training,if applicable, at time of indenture.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. May be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Must be a resident, for at least one year, of either Niagara County or one of the following towns in Orleans County: Carlton, Ridgeway, Albion, Gaines, Shelby, Yates, or Barre.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
