Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Operating Engineers, Local Union #825, will conduct a recruitment from September 3, 2019 through September 16, 2019 for 5 Operating Engineer (Universal Equipment) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 5 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions, the Hudson Valley and Southern Tier regions. 

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #825, 96 Bates/Gates Road, New Hampton, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period. The application is also available on Saturday, September 7, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This is a limited-application recruitment. Applications will be distributed during the recruitment dates or until 60 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. Applications must be completed in person.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local 825, which includes the counties of Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to acquire a NYS Commercial Driver's License. Apprentices may be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must pass the Work Keys Locating Information Test to be eligible for an interview.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
