Rochester Husband and Wife Share $5,350,000 Lotto Prize with Daughter

New York Lottery spokesperson Gretchen Dizer today introduced Warren and Joan Chase of Rochester and Darcy Frisina of Ithaca as the co-winners of a $10,700,000 Lotto jackpot drawn on June 29. A second jackpot winning ticket for the same drawing was sold in the Bronx, bringing the Chase-Frisina prize to $5,350,000.

Dizer presented the Finger Lakes region’s newest Lottery millionaires with their ceremonial prize check at Baytowne Liquor at 1900 Empire Boulevard in Webster where Warren Chase purchased the trio’s lucky ticket.

Chase, 69, a retired sales manager for Lake Beverages, said he routinely buys his Lottery tickets every Tuesday and Thursday at Baytowne Liquor and then faithfully checks the winning numbers at home after Sunday mass. On June 30, Chase said he checked the paper several times before realizing one set of random numbers he’s been playing for years matched the six Lotto numbers drawn the evening prior.

“I brought the ticket and the paper out to my wife and said, ‘Honey, check these numbers.’ We couldn’t believe it.”

The jackpot winning numbers for the June 29 Lotto drawing were 03-07-12-13-18-20.

Chase and his wife Joan, 69, waited to tell their family members living in Ithaca about their sudden change in fortune until they could all meet face to face. Chase said the family made plans to get together for lunch.

“I told them I needed to tell them something first,” recalled Chase, the ticket buyer. “They thought one of us was dying!” He said he and his wife offered to split the jackpot with their daughter Darcy, a stay at home mom, while still at lunch. Frisina, 39, said she was thrilled with the offer and added, “It will make life comfortable.”

The family members opted to receive one lump sum payment totaling $3,404,922 which represents the cash value of the annuitized jackpot. Warren and Joan Chase will split 75 percent of the lump sum amount, netting each more than $830,000 after required tax withholdings. Frisina’s 25 percent share will net her more than $560,000 after taxes.

The trio plans to keep their new found wealth in the family, agreeing they will use the money to take care of one another. “We’re going to continue our normal lives,” Warren Chase explained. “I hope it doesn’t change us.”

The Chases and their daughter bring to 83 the number of New Yorkers who have received a Lottery jackpot prize of $1,000,000 or more in 2013.

The New York Lottery contributed a total of 174,934,683.44 in Lottery Aid To Education to school districts throughout Monroe County ($161,462,177.02) and Tompkins County ($13,472,506.42) during fiscal year 2012-2013.
