Olean, NY (January 8, 2015) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Southern Tier Laborers, Local Union #621, will conduct a recruitment from February 3, 2015 through March 12, 2015 for eight skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the following New York State Department of Labor offices, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., every Tuesday and Thursday during the recruitment period:

§  175 North Union Street, Olean, NY

§  19 East Third Street, Jamestown, NY

§  407 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY

Applications may be picked up and completed at any of the above offices.  A basic math test will be administered by the Department of Labor.  The test will be given at each of the offices listed above, at a date to be determined.  Applicants must pass this test with a minimum score of 80% to be considered.

The Committee requires that applicants:

§  Must be at least 18 years old.

§  Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).

§  Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:

o    Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants.

o    Regularly standing and lifting

o    Repeated squatting and/or bending.

o    Working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures and all types of weather.

o    Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment.

o    Working from ladders and scaffolds.

§  Must pass a medical exam and drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

§  Must have a valid driver’s license in order to drive company vehicles on public roads.

§  Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.

§  Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
