NYS OASAS ANNOUNCES AWARD OF FUNDING TO EXPAND YOUTH ADDICTION PREVENTION SERVICES IN MOHAWK VALLEY

Program Will Help Local Parents and Families Affected by Opioid Crisis

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) today announced the award of approximately $170,000 to expand the “Triple P” Positive Parenting Program. The Center for Family Life and Recovery, based in Utica, is receiving $88,200, and the HFM Prevention Council in Johnstown is receiving $81,701. Funding for this initiative was provided through the federal State Opioid Response Grant and administered by OASAS.

"I have seen the heartbreak in the eyes of parents and families who have lost children to addiction," said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Co-Chair of the Heroin and Opioid Task Force. "This funding to expand programming at facilities in the Mohawk Valley will build on our efforts to make sure young people have the services and support they need to make positive decisions and improve their behavior and overall wellbeing. As the opioid epidemic continues to impact communities across New York, we are committed to investing in care and resources to help prevent addiction and save lives.”

“OASAS prevention providers play a significant role in helping young people avoid actions and behaviors that can lead to substance use, or other behavioral problems,” OASAS Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez said. “Under the leadership of Governor Cuomo, the expansion of this important and effective program will enable more young people and families to receive prevention resources that can help lead them towards a healthy life, free from addiction.”

The Triple P program has been shown to reduce risky behaviors among youth, such as substance use and juvenile offending, as well as encourage positive social behavior and emotional wellbeing. The program has also demonstrated success in reducing parental depression, stress, anxiety, and family conflict, and increasing positive family interactions.

Funding awarded through this program will help providers establish collaborations with other community partners who are focused on assisting caregivers of at-risk young children ages 12 and younger. Recipients will also provide services, such as training and implementation oversight geared towards parents and families affected by the opioid crisis.

The Center for Family Life and Recovery will offer programming at six locations, including in Rome, Utica, and Camden. This includes a dad’s Triple P Program, and programming offered in Spanish. The Center for Family Life and Recovery is partnering with The Neighborhood Center, Insight House, and Care Net of Central New York for this initiative.

HFM Prevention Council will offer programming at two locations: The Creative Connections Clubhouse in Amsterdam, and the Rob Constantine Recovery Center located in Johnstown.

Senator Joseph Griffo said, "I am pleased that the Center for Family Life and Recovery in Utica will be receiving funding to expand its ‘Triple P’ Positive Parenting Program. This funding will provide youth and families in the community with access to important evidence-based prevention resources and will help the center to continue to support individuals who are struggling with addiction, mental health and behavioral issues."

Senator Jim Tedisco said,"This new grant will help HFM Prevention Council will help more young people make healthy decisions and avoid the scourge of opioid addiction. I want to thank OASAS for awarding this grant that will have a positive impact on young people and their families in Fulton and Hamilton Counties."

Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon said, “The Center for Family Life and Recovery provides invaluable services to Mohawk Valley residents as they battle addiction or seek help for mental health issues. The center’s Triple P program has made a true difference by helping local youth avoid risky behaviors that can lead to addiction and encouraging positive experiences. This funding will go a long way toward assisting more kids in our communities, and I want to thank the governor and OASAS for their support of the program.”

Assemblyman Robert Smullen said, “I know the HFM Prevention Council will put this funding to good use in its continuing efforts to fight opioid addiction. Recently, I had the opportunity to meet with advocates from the Rob Constantine Recovery and Community Outreach Center. It’s clear to me that this organization is making a positive impact in the community and will serve as a very effective partner in supporting the Triple P initiative.”
