Statement from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Town of North Hempstead Regarding Investigations at the I-Park Soccer Fields

Lockheed-Martin is undertaking investigations and cleanup actions at the former Unisys facility in the Town of North Hempstead.  As part of their efforts to prepare portions of the site for excavation in the coming months, contractors for the cleanup project conducted a surface scan of a small portion of the nearby I-Park soccer field area in an attempt to determine local background radiation levels.  During the course of that analysis, the contractor found one reading of slightly elevated radiation levels compared to the normal background levels on an isolated corner of the portion of the park that was analyzed, and not on the soccer fields themselves.‎

Experts from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York State Department of Health evaluated this reading by the consultant and determined that those levels did not pose a risk to public health or the environment, but as a precaution the town closed the park and Lockheed-Martin performed a radiation survey over the entire park Friday.  Preliminary results of this scan conducted Friday did not observe any additional elevated levels of radiation on the park or the soccer fields.

The Town will be re-opening the park once the final report is prepared by the contractors and the preliminary results are verified.  Additional information will be provided as it is available and we will continue to keep the community informed as this investigation concludes.
