Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Buffalo, NY (September 3, 2013) - The International Union of Elevator Constructors JATC, Local Union #14, will conduct a recruitment from September 9, 2013 through September 20, 2013 for one elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be obtained and submitted at the Local Union #14 office, 3527 Harlem Road, Suite 10A, Buffalo, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period.  

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (administered by the National Elevator Industry Educational Program) with a minimum score of 70.  A testing fee of $25 must be paid at the time of testing.  The payment must be in the form of a money order or bank check (no cash or personal checks will be accepted).  Please note, applicants may request the testing fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must pass a post-offer physical, administered by a physician, at the expense of the signatory contractor. 
  • Must attest to being capable of performing the physical requirements of the trade (also determined by the post-offer physical), which include:
    • Lifting, climbing, and working from heights.
    • Performing essential job functions in the field, with exposure to non-controlled climate conditions.
    • Withstanding heights and working in cramped working conditions.
    • Using hands, arms, and feet for repetitive lifting.
    • Using hands and arms to operate various hand and power tools, and for recording written information.
    • Perceiving color to distinguish color-coded wiring components.
    • Assisting in the installation, maintenance and repair of passenger and freight elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters and moving sidewalks, under the direction of a mechanic.
    • Manually loading, unloading and moving materials, equipment and tools from vehicles to work areas. 
    • Lifting parts weighing up to 100 pounds.
    • Manually cleaning elevator car tops, machine rooms, pits, rails and hoistways.
    • Manually painting machine rooms and pit.
    • Using periods of high concentration and knowledge of elevator systems to assist electrical and mechanical installation, repair and service operations.
    • Following written or oral directions of mechanic and/or field superintendent. 
    • Maintaining elevator lighting fixtures.
    • Visually and audibly monitoring equipment operation to determine faulty functioning. 
    • Understanding general arithmetic.
    • Speaking and writing in a clear and understandable manner for internal/external relations.
    • Understanding verbal or written instructions.
    • Learning, practicing, and adhering to safety standards.
    • Performing administrative duties, such as gathering data and submitting written reports.
    •  Walking or standing approximately 90% of the time and sitting approximately 10% of the time on the job.
    • Lifting up to 100 pounds approximately 75% of the time.
    • Performing repetitive stooping, forward bending and crouching approximately 70% of the time.
    • Traveling up to 95% of the time.  
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #14, which includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming counties.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from different job sites and related instruction.
  • Must pass a post-offer drug test, administered by a laboratory, at the expense of the signatory contractor.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
