ADVISORY: MTA Officials to Discuss Weekend Replacement of 1911-Era Bridge in Garden City on Saturday, Oct. 5

 

At noon tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 5, MTA officials will be available for comments at the site of a former 108-year-old bridge that carried the LIRR Main Line over Nassau Boulevard in Garden City. The bridge will have been removed, and officials will discuss the weekend-long project to replace it with a new bridge, and how this work fits in with the overall LIRR Expansion Project to add a third track to the main line.

WHAT:      Officials will be available to discuss the weekend-long project to remove a 108-year-old LIRR bridge and replace it by rolling in a new bridge that has been assembled nearby. The work is expected to be completed in time to re-establish LIRR train service for Monday morning’s rush hour.
 
FACTS ABOUT THE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT:
  • Existing bridge built: 1911 – 108 years ago, during the Taft Administration
  • Existing bridge vehicular clearance: 11’6” – making it among the LIRR’s bridges most frequently struck by overheight trucks
  • New bridge vehicular clearance: 14’0”
  • New bridge width: 39 feet – bays for three tracks
  • New bridge length: 47 feet
  • Number of worker hours to construct and install bridge: 1,800 worker hours
  • Amount of concrete poured for bridge abutment extension: 60 Cubic yards
  • Number of commuters who will pass over the bridge each day: 107,000 riders per day using more than 250 trains per day
