Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (August 9, 2013) – The International Union of Elevator Constructors Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, Local Union #27 (Rochester), will conduct a recruitment from August 19, 2013 through August 30, 2013 for one elevator/escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #27 office, 244 Paul Road, Suite 3, Rochester, NY from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesdays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a post-offer physical exam administered by a physician and paid for by the signatory contractor.
  • Must state that he/she is capable of performing the physical requirements of the trade, which include the following:
    • The ability to perform essential job functions in field settings with exposure to non-controlled climate conditions.
    • The ability and willingness to withstand heights and work in cramped working conditions.
    • The ability to use hands, arms and feet for repetitive lifting, up to 100 lbs., approximately 75% of the time.
    • The ability to walk or stand approximately 90%, and to sit approximately 10%, of the time on the job.
    • The ability to perform repetitive stooping, forward bending and crouching approximately 70% of the time.
    • The ability to use hands and arms to operate various hand and power tools and to record written information
    • The ability to communicate verbally.
    • The ability to observe essential functions for satisfactory job performance.
    • The ability to perceive color to distinguish color-coded wiring components.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from different job sites and classroom training facility. Also, the must have the ability and willingness to travel up to 95% of the time.
  • Must pass a post-offer drug test administered by a laboratory, at the expense of the signatory contractor.
  • Must be a resident of Local #27’s jurisdiction, which includes the following counties:  Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates.
  • Must score a minimum of 70 out of 100 on the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test. Score is part of evaluation. A $25.00 test fee is required on test day when test is administered. Postal Money Order or bank certified checks only. No cash and no personal checks will be accepted. Please note: You may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
