Insulation & Asbestos Workers Recruit Apprentices

Peekskill, NY (August 9, 2013) – The Asbestos Workers JAC, Local Union #91, will conduct a recruitment from Wednesday, August 21, 2013 through Wednesday, September 4, 2013 for four insulation and asbestos worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #91 office, 1024 McKinley St., Peekskill, NY, Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications will not be available on Labor Day, September 2, 2013. Applications will be accepted during the recruitment period or until 50 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. The applications must be completed and returned to the above address no later than Monday, September 9, 2013 at 4:00 p.m.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must provide DD-214 (military discharge papers), if applicable.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work as determined by an apprentice agility test and attestation to the following criteria on the employment application:
    • Ability to work an 8-hour day continually on your feet.
    • Ability to lift and carry weights in excess of 50 lbs. for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and in unheated buildings.
    • Ability to work in restrictive or confined spaces.
    • Ability to work at heights in excess of 20 ft.
    • Ability to carry a 12-foot ladder for a distance of 20 feet and set it up.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and provide own transportation to and from the job. Job sites are in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange and Dutchess counties.
  • Must take a medical exam, including random drug screening, during the probationary period. The medical exam and drug testing will be at the expense of Local #91.
  • Must be able to purchase text material for use in related training classes as required; approximate cost is $50.00.
  • Must be able to purchase hand tools for use in the related training classes and job sites as required; approximate cost is $50.00.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
