Roofers Recruit Apprentices

West Seneca, NY (April 29, 2020) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Roofers, Local Union #74 (Western NY), will conduct a recruitment from May 26, 2020 through May 21, 2021 for 20 Roofer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 20 openings listed for Roofer apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions of the state.

Applications must be completed in person at JATC for Roofers, Local Union #74, 2800 Clinton Street, West Seneca, NY, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. All applications must be received no later than May 21, 2021. Certificates and work records need to be submitted upon offer of employment.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a physical examination, at the expense of the sponsor, after acceptance into the program.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by WNY HealthWorks. This includes:
    • Must be able to list 50 pounds, unassisted, from the floor to the waist and then from waist to shoulder.
    • Must be able to carry a minimum of 50 pounds, unassisted, for a minimum of 20 feet.
    • Must not have a fear of heights.
    • Must be willing to work outdoors, in hot and cold conditions as well as all types of inclement weather.
    • Must be able to climb 40-foot ladder.
    • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time.
    • Must be able to crouch, stoop, reach, squat and bend repeatedly.
  • Must take and pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after acceptance into the program and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
