DEC REGION 3 TO HOST ‘GET OUTDOORS & GET TOGETHER DAY’ WITH FOUR EVENTS IN ULSTER AND DUTCHESS COUNTIES

Inclusive, Accessible, and Free Family-Friendly Activities on June 14

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Region 3 Office is hosting ‘Get Outdoors & Get Together Day’ on June 14 at Kenneth L. Wilson Campground and Day Use Area, the Catskills Visitor Center, Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center, and Norrie Point Environmental Center. 

Get Outdoors & Get Together Day brings people of all abilities, ages, identities, and backgrounds together for fun, healthful activities as part of Governor Kathy Hochul's efforts to broaden the diversity of users and ensure inclusivity of access to public lands. This year’s statewide event is hosted by DEC and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Office of the Chief Disability Officer, the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, the Department of Veterans' Services, the Office of Mental Health, and the Justice Center for the Protection of People With Special Needs. Full details, including schedules, can be found on DEC's website. 

DEC Region 3 is offering the following opportunities for the public: 

Kenneth L. Wilson Campground and Day Use Area

Mount Tremper, Ulster County 

Date: June 14, 2025

Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: 859 Wittenberg Rd, Mount Tremper, NY 12457

Free activities include:

  • Fishing station with adaptive equipment available;
  • Track chair demonstration with SOAR;
  • Trail activity with Catskill 3500;
  • Sustainability activity;
  • K9 demonstration with a DEC Environmental Conservation Officer;
  • Birding table/activity with John Burroughs Natural History Society;
  • Paddling with the Ashokan Watershed; and,
  • Container gardening demonstration. 

Accessible features at this site: Fishing pier/wildlife viewing platform, accessible fishing, hiking trail, picnic pavilion, and restrooms.  

 

Catskills Visitor Center

Mount Tremper, Ulster County 

Date: June 14, 2025

Time: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. 

Location: 5096 State Route 28, Mount Tremper, NY 12457

Free activities include:

  • Welcome table;
  • Archery (register for a timeslot at: https://givebutter.com/VyJMw6);
  • Birding table;
  • Lawn games;
  • Macros and Stream Health Station;
  • Crafts Station: pine cone bird feeders, seed planting, butterfly creations, and imagination binoculars; and,
  • Story Walk™: Mount Tremper has a Temper.

Timed Programs:

  • 1:00 pm – Field Sketching for Beginners  
  • 2:00 pm – Sister Rain and Brother Sun Puppet Show  

Accessible features at this site: Picnic pavilion, hiking trail, and restrooms. 

 

Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center

Wappingers Falls, Dutchess County 

Date: June 14, 2025

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free activities include:

  • Bird Walk;
  • Orienteering;
  • Naturalist hike on Woodland Trail (ADA accessible);
  • Crafts and seed planting with the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities; and,
  • Open Barn Tours of our heritage livestock. 

Accessible features at this site: Hiking trail, picnic area, restrooms, and wheelchair ramp access to the barn.  

 

Norrie Point Environmental Center

Staatsburg, Dutchess County 

Date: June 14, 2025

Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Location: 256 Norrie Point Way, Staatsburg, NY 12580

Free activities include:

  • Rod fishing with wheelchair accessible patio and adaptive fishing gear available;
  • Fish prints (painting activity);
  • Seining and fish identification;
  • Yard games;
  • Chalk drawing on patio;
  • Nature walk with scavenger hunt; and,
  • Education Center open house. 

Accessible features at this site: Wheelchair-accessible patio, ADA-accessible walkway to Education Center, and restrooms. 

All events will be held rain or shine. Equipment will be provided for archery and fishing activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own snacks, water, and sunblock. Participants are encouraged to Love Our New York Lands all year by practicing Leave No Trace™ principles and by recreating safely and sustainably and hiking in suitable conditions based on weather and experience level.
