Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

Utica, NY (September 23, 2013) - The Ironworkers Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local Union #440 (District II - Utica), will conduct a recruitment from September 30, 2013 through October 3, 2014 for five ironworker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Please note that the five openings listed for ironworker apprentices represent the total number for all regions – Central, Mohawk Valley and North Country.

Applications will be available at the office of Local Union #440, 801 Varick Street, 2nd Floor, Utica, NY from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications can also be obtained by calling the Union Hall at (315) 735-4531.  All applications must be received no later than October 10, 2014.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of an ironworker, as determined by a (post-offer) physical and a drug test administered by a physician (costs for medical examinations, if required, are at the expense of the sponsor).
  • Must be able to lift 30-100 lbs., climb, and work from heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Must be a resident of Local #440’s jurisdiction, which includes all of Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego, and Lewis counties, and the following townships:
    • Madison County - townships of Eaton, Madison, Lebanon, Earlville, Brookfield, Smyrna, Sherburne, Columbus, Plymouth, N. Norwich, and New Berlin.
    • Hamilton County- townships of Indian Lake, Arietta, Lake Pleasant, Speculator, and Morehouse.
    • Fulton County - townships of Oppenheim, Stratford, and Ephratah.
    • Montgomery County - townships of Minden, St. Johnsville, Palatine, and Canajoharie.
  • Must provide proof of their ability to work in the United States, if selected for the program.
  • Must provide proof of: diploma/GED, birth certificate, military transfer card or discharge form DD214 (if applicable), current certifications, driver’s license, and Social Security card, if selected for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
