Roofers Recruit Apprentices

Elmira, NY (February 4, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Committee for Area Sheet Metal Workers LU #112 will conduct a recruitment from February 10, 2014 through February 6, 2015 for six roofer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Elmira CSS Workforce NY office, 318 Madison Ave., Elmira, NY from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications must be completed and mailed to Roofers JAC Local Union #203, 32 West State Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must submit a signed affidavit stating that he/she is physically able to do the work of a roofer, which includes:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noises and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing and walking.
    • Repeated squatting and bending.
    • Working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures.
    • Lifting and moving heavy objects and equipment.
    • Working off of ladders and scaffolds at extreme heights.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
