NYS OFFICE OF GENERAL SERVICES ANNOUNCES MONTHLY FARMERS MARKET AT THE ADAM CLAYTON POWELL, JR. STATE OFFICE BUILDING IN HARLEM

Team Unity’s ‘Market in the Heights’ to Feature Fresh Produce, Ready-to-Eat Foods, and Retail Vendors on One Saturday Each Month

New York State Office of General Services Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced that the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building in Harlem will host an outdoor “Market in the Heights” farmers market one Saturday each month. The markets are organized by Team Unity, a nonprofit organization that supports and advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion through multicultural education and education equity in the New York City metropolitan area.

“The Office of General Services is proud to support Team Unity’s efforts to bring healthy food options to our neighbors in Harlem,” Commissioner Moy said. “By providing space for Market in the Heights on the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building plaza, we are helping to advance Governor Hochul’s goals of bringing fresh foods to underserved communities while supporting our farmers and the local economy.”

Market in the Heights is a pilot project that will focus on the small-scale implementation of accessible farmers markets throughout the greater NYC Metro area with an expansion arm for local community gardens,” said Team Unity Executive Director Richard Cox, who was born and raised in Harlem’s Sugar Hill community. “With tailored outreach, our project strategically leverages the use of community partners to decrease food insecurity in Harlem while increasing nutrition equity. We are hopeful that our pilot will be successful and impactful in 2023 with the goal of expanding this message weekly in 2024.”

Market in the Heights will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 12, September 9, October 21, and November 11. The markets will offer fresh produce, ready-to-eat foods, and retail vendors. Some vendors will be certified to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Electronic Benefit Transfer (SNAP/EBT) payments.
