The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today released the latest episode of “DEC Does What?!”, the bi-weekly podcast that features conversations with DEC experts about the agency’s wide-ranging efforts to protect New Yorkers and the environment. Episode 23—“Talking Turkey”— highlights New York’s efforts to grow wild turkey populations, and how DEC’s hunting education programs provide for a safe and effective turkey hunting season in the spring and fall.

In this episode, hosts Executive Deputy Commissioner Sean Mahar and Chief of Staff Erica Ringewald welcome Gordon Batcheller, retired DEC’s Wildlife Bureau Chief and current Wildlife Biologist with the Northeast Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, and Mike Menza, Environmental Program Specialist with DEC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, to discuss New York’s spring and fall turkey hunting seasons, the extraordinary restoration success story of New York’s wild turkey population, and the importance of providing safe and ethical hunting opportunities to future generations.

Gordon and Mike also show off their wild turkey calls, musical skills, and share best practices for hunters to employ when afield this spring and their best turkey recipes.
