DEC REGION 5 TO HOST ‘GET OUTDOORS & GET TOGETHER DAY’ EVENT AT SCAROON MANOR CAMPGROUND AND DAY USE AREA

Inclusive, Accessible, and Free Family-Friendly Recreation Event on June 14

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Region 5 Office is hosting ‘Get Outdoors & Get Together Day’ on June 14 at Scaroon Manor Campground and Day Use Area, Warren County.  

 

Get Outdoors & Get Together Day brings people of all abilities, ages, identities, and backgrounds together for fun, healthful activities as part of Governor Kathy Hochul's efforts to broaden the diversity of users and ensure inclusivity of access to public lands. This year’s statewide event is hosted by DEC and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Office of the Chief Disability Officer, the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, the Department of Veterans' Services, the Office of Mental Health, and the Justice Center for the Protection of People With Special Needs. Full details, including schedules, can be found on DEC's website. 

 

DEC Region 5 is offering the following free opportunity for the public: 

  

Scaroon Manor Campground & Day Use Area 

  

Date: June 14, 2025 

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Location: 8728 State Route 9, Pottersville, NY 12860

Free activities include: 

  • Fishing demonstrations at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 1 p.m. with adaptive equipment available; 
  • Paddling with kayak and canoe rentals available; 
  • Hiking trails; 
  • Lawn games; 
  • Volleyball; and, 
  • Demonstration campsite offering campfire safety tips and s’mores with DEC Forest Rangers and special guest Smokey Bear.   

Informational tables and displays at the pavilion:   

  • Crafts with the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities; 
  • Track Talk – Rubber animal tracks, furs, and more; 
  • Aquatic Invasive Species information; 
  • Fish ID and general information;  
  • Tree ID and terrestrial invasive species information;  
  • Swag giveaways; 
  • Hiking information and safety tips;  
  • Leave No TraceTM demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 11:45 p.m., 1:30 p.m. 
  • Interactive assistive tech and adapted toys for outdoor use by the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities (TRIAD) Program.   

Accessible features at this site: Hand boat launch with dock, fishing/wildlife viewing platform, picnic area and pavilion, hiking trail, beach access route, and restrooms. 

 

The event will be held rain or shine. Equipment will be provided for fishing. Attendees may also bring their own fishing poles and equipment for personal use and are encouraged to bring their own snacks, water, and sunblock.  

 

Participants are encouraged to Love Our New York Lands all year by practicing Leave No Trace™ principles and by recreating safely and sustainably and hiking in suitable conditions based on weather and experience level.
