The Long Island Rail Road today announced it had awarded a $8.6 million contract to build two new elevators at the Murray Hill LIRR station. The elevators will meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and will connect customers from street level to the platforms. Several other upgrades are included in the project to improve platforms, and install new security cameras, lighting and signage. Work is expected to begin in March. Construction crews from will furnish and install two new hydraulic elevators, one at each of the two platforms. Elevator shafts will be constructed, along with machine rooms and associated site and platform improvements. Site work will include cutting back and reinstalling portions of the existing retaining walls, and the installation of new yellow warning strips near platform edges.
LoDuca Associates, Inc., of Islandia, Long Island will perform the work at the station, located along the Port Washington Branch in Queens, beneath 150th Street and 41st Avenue, just south of Roosevelt Avenue, which is expected to be complete in spring of 2019. The work will be performed using MTA Capital funds.
Project Details:
The LIRR has been working to bring accessibility to more stations throughout Queens. The Queens Village Station, considered a transportation hub, received ADA-compliant elevators in 2013, and elevators are currently being installed at the heavily trafficked Flushing-Main Street Station.
