LIRR to Construct Two New Elevators at Murray Hill Station Project Includes Platform Improvements, New Security Cameras, Lighting, and Signage
The Long Island Rail Road today announced it had awarded a $8.6 million contract to build two new elevators at the Murray Hill LIRR station. The elevators will meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and will connect customers from street level to the platforms. Several other upgrades are included in the project to improve platforms, and install new security cameras, lighting and signage. Work is expected to begin in March. Construction crews from will furnish and install two new hydraulic elevators, one at each of the two platforms. Elevator shafts will be constructed, along with machine rooms and associated site and platform improvements. Site work will include cutting back and reinstalling portions of the existing retaining walls, and the installation of new yellow warning strips near platform edges. LoDuca Associates, Inc., of Islandia, Long Island will perform the work at the station, located along the Port Washington Branch in Queens, beneath 150^th Street and 41^st Avenue, just south of Roosevelt Avenue, which is expected to be complete in spring of 2019. The work will be performed using MTA Capital funds. Project Details: A small portion of the current retaining wall will be demolished to create space for a new elevator shaft structure. New communications and fire alarm systems will be installed to improve customer safety and experience. Elevator signage will be placed at the west and eastbound entrances, where the elevators will be placed. Electrical service upgrades will be performed to support the new elevators. New LED lighting in the vicinity of the new elevators. New security cameras to be installed throughout the station. Existing retaining walls to be repainted. The LIRR has been working to bring accessibility to more stations throughout Queens. The Queens Village Station, considered a transportation hub, received ADA-compliant elevators in 2013, and elevators are currently being installed at the heavily trafficked Flushing-Main Street Station.
