Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

Brookhaven, NY (July 21, 2017) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Operating Engineers, Local Union #138, will conduct a recruitment from August 21, 2017 through September 1, 2017 for two operating engineer (heavy equipment) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today. 

Applications can be obtained and submitted at Local Union #138, 575 Horseblock Road, Brookhaven, NY, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications must be completed and returned the same day they are picked up. 

            The Committee requires that applicants: 

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be a resident of Nassau County or Suffolk County. Must provide two proofs of residency other than a driver’s license or car registration, after selection and prior to indenture. 
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States. Proof will be required, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.
  • Must provide three personal reference letters, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide a copy of a valid photo identification, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
