Insulation and Asbestos Workers Recruit Apprentices

Peekskill, NY (July 17, 2015) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Insulation and Asbestos Workers, Local Union #91, will conduct a recruitment from August 17, 2015 through August 28, 2015 for eight insulation and asbestos worker apprentices, the New  York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #91, 1024 McKinley Street, Peekskill, NY, Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  There will be 50 applications available. Applications will be given out on a first- come, first-served basis.  All applications must be returned to Local Union #91 no later than 4:00 p.m. on September 2, 2015.

The Committee requires that applicants:

·         Must be at least 18 years old.

·         Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). 

·         Must pass a drug test and a medical exam, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

·         Must pass an agility test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

·         Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:

o      Working an 8-hour day continually on their feet.

o      Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 50 lbs. for extended periods.

o      Working in restrictive or confined spaces.

o      Working at heights that may exceed 20 feet.

o      Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.

o      Carrying a 12-foot ladder for a distance of 20 feet and setting it up.

·         Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction.  Work sites are located in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties.

·         Must purchase tools for use in related instruction and work sites.  Tools will cost approximately $50 per year.

·         Must purchase text materials for use in related instruction.  Text materials will cost approximately $50 per year.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
