Roofers Recruit Apprentices

West Seneca, NY (February 9, 2021) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Roofers of WNY, Local Union #74, will conduct a recruitment from May 24, 2021 through May 23, 2022 for 20 Roofer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 20 openings listed for Roofer apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions of the state.

Applications must be completed in person at JATC for Roofers of WNY, Local Union #74, 2800 Clinton Street, West Seneca, NY, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. All applications must be received no later than May 23, 2022.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a physical examination, at the expense of the sponsor, after acceptance into the program.
  • Must take and pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after acceptance into the program and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by WNY HealthWorks. This includes:
    • Able to lift 50 pounds, unassisted, from the floor to the waist and then from waist to shoulder.
    • Able to carry a minimum of 50 pounds, unassisted, for a minimum of 20 feet.
    • Able to climb 40-foot ladder.
    • Must not have a fear of heights.
    • Able to stand for prolonged periods of time.
    • Able to crouch, stoop, reach, squat and bend repeatedly.
    • Willing to work outdoors, in hot and cold conditions as well as all types of inclement weather.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must be able to read, hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English.
  • Certificates and work records need to be submitted upon offer of employment.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
