“DEC DOES WHAT?!” PODCAST EPISODE 25 NOW AVAILABLE: FROM PIT TO PARK: RECLAIMING NEW YORK’S MINED LANDS

Episode Explores the Essential Role of Minerals in New York’s Economy and DEC’s Oversight of Mining Industry to Protect the Environment

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today released the latest episode of “DEC Does What?!”, the bi-weekly podcast that features conversations with DEC experts about the agency’s wide-ranging efforts to protect New Yorkers and the environment. Episode 25—“From Pit to Park: Reclaiming New York’s Mined Lands”—drills down on the important work of DEC’s Division of Mineral Resources.

New York State is rich in minerals, including sand, gravel, bluestone, zinc, and salt, which are mined for industrial and construction uses and the U.S. Geological Survey estimates the annual value of New York's mineral production at $1.84 Billion. In this episode, hosts Executive Deputy Commissioner Sean Mahar and Chief of Staff Erica Ringewald are joined by Psalm Wyckoff, Section Chief for the Mined Land Reclamation Program, and Jami June, Mined Land Reclamation Specialist—staff with DEC’s Division of Mineral Resources—to discuss the essential role of minerals in New York State’s economy and how the agency oversees the mining industry to ensure the protection of natural resources

Psalm and Jami explain the history of the State’s Mined Land Reclamation Law, the process of reclaiming a mine after mineral extraction work is complete, how they work with mine operators to ensure the safety of mining sites, and how DEC prioritizes public engagement on the permitting process to protect public health and the environment.
