The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced 50,000 commemorative MetroCards featuring a Veterans Day image will be available for customers beginning on Friday, Nov. 6. The cards will be available at select MetroCard vending machines in high ridership stations in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx. A number of cards will also be available at MetroCard vending machines at the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island.

The commemorative MetroCards, which were created by an in-house design team at New York City Transit, will also be given to each MTA agency’s Veterans Employee Resource Group to distribute at their Veterans Day events. The images on the cards will also be shown on digital display screens throughout the system.

“We are so proud to honor the veterans who serve our country in the military,” said Sarah Feinberg, Interim President of NYC Transit. “It’s important for our riders to remember the sacrifices of the veterans among us, including those who now help keep the city moving during the COVID-19 pandemic as Transit workers.”

“I am so pleased and grateful that the MTA has chosen a MetroCard design that honors our veterans,” said Manolin Tirado, Chairperson of the NYC Transit Veterans Employee Resource Group. “These cards will remind our riders that we appreciate veterans across the city including thousands of them who have served their city as employees of New York City Transit.”

The commemorative MetroCards will be available at the following stations’ vending machines:

  • Flushing-Main St (7)
  • Crown Heights-Utica Av (3,4)
  • Atlantic Av-Barclay Center (d,n,r)
  • Port Authority 42 St (a,c,e)
  • Grand Central-42 St (4,5,6,7)
  • 3 Av-149 St (2,5)

Customers are not guaranteed to receive a commemorative MetroCard when they make a purchase at the vending machines at one of these stations.

NYC Transit’s Veterans Employee Resource Group is one of nine affinity groups within NYC Transit’s Diversity Council, and has grown exponentially in its first year, increasing its membership from its founding eight to 151 members today.

The Veterans Employee Resource Group participates in monthly outreach events, including job fairs, geared towards fellow veterans. Last December, the group held a holiday collection drive for troops stationed overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq. Its goals are to empower employee veterans through career development, promote more veterans within the MTA and instruct, inform and inspire the NYC Transit community on the historical and multicultural impact that military veterans have had on society through their proud service.
