MEDIA ADVISORY FOR THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017

DEC to Display More Than One Ton of Elephant Ivory that will be Crushed in NYC’s Central Park on Aug. 3

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will display more than one ton of illegal ivory in its Central Office in Albany Thursday as a prelude to next week’s Ivory Crush in Central Park, New York City. The ornate ivory tusks, trinkets, statues, and jewelry were confiscated through the state’s enforcement efforts over the last several years.

The Ivory Crush, which takes place on Aug. 3, is being organized by DEC, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and Tiffany & Co. to send a clear message that the state and its partners are dedicated to eradicating the illegal ivory trade in New York, a wildlife crime that threatens to wipe out Africa’s elephants.
