Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit (NYCT) leadership commended Bus Operator Ian Hanley for his decisive actions leading an estimated 15-20 passengers to safety after a building collapsed in front of his Bx40 bus at approximately 3:30 pm on Monday. NYC Transit Senior Vice President of Buses Frank Annicaro presented Operator Hanley with a Certificate of Commendation at the Gun Hill Road Bus Depot in the Bronx on Dec. 13, 2023.

“You can’t train bus operators for something like this and in New York City anything can happen, but assisting customers came naturally to Ian,” said NYC Transit Senior Vice President of Buses Frank Annicaro. “This is what bus operators do every day, tend to their customers, make sure they get to where they need to go safely.”

Bus Operator Hanley, a nearly 24-year veteran of New York City Transit, was operating westbound on Burnside Avenue when the corner of a seven-story building collapsed in front of the bus, sending debris and dust onto the road and into the air. With rubble blocking the bus’s way, Operator Hanley safely pulled the bus over and assisted customers off and out of harm’s way. No customers were injured.
