Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Olean, NY (December 14, 2018) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Southern Tier Laborers, Local Union #621, will conduct a recruitment from February 5, 2019 through March 14, 2019 for four skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the following New York State Department of Labor offices, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., every Tuesday and Thursday during the recruitment period:

  • 175 North Union Street, Olean, NY
  • 19 East Third Street, Jamestown, NY
  • 407 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY

Applications may be picked up and completed at any of the above offices. All applications must be received by no later than last day of the recruitment period. A basic math test will be administered by the Department of Labor. The test will be given at each of the offices listed above, at a date to be determined. Applicants must pass this test with a minimum score of 80% to be considered.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Working under exposure to extreme temperatures, such as being outside on winter days or inside confined space areas were high temperatures can be reached.
    • Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment.
    • Working from ladders and scaffolds at protected heights.
  • Must pass a medical exam and drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in order to drive company vehicles on public highways.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
